چکیده

Mark-recapture models are extensively used in quantitative population ecology, providing estimates of population vital rates, such as survival, that are difficult to obtain using other methods. Vital rates are commonly modeled as functions of explanatory covariates, adding considerable flexibility to mark-recapture models, but also increasing the subjectivity and complexity of the modeling process. Consequently, model selection and the evaluation of covariate structure remain critical aspects of mark-recapture modeling. The difficulties involved in model selection are compounded in Cormack-JollySeber models because they are composed of separate sub-models for survival and recapture probabilities, which are conceptualized independently even though their parameters are not statistically independent. The construction of models as combinations of sub-models, together with multiple potential covariates, can lead to a large model set. Although desirable, estimation of the parameters of all models may not be feasible. Strategies to search a model space and base inference on a subset of all models exist and enjoy widespread use. However, even though the methods used to search a model space can be expected to influence parameter estimation, the assessment of covariate importance, and therefore the ecological interpretation of the modeling results, the performance of these strategies has received limited investigation. We present a new strategy for searching the space of a candidate set of Cormack-Jolly-Seber models and explore its performance relative to existing strategies using computer simulation. The new strategy provides an improved assessment of the importance of covariates and covariate combinations used to model survival and recapture probabilities, while requiring only a modest increase in the number of models on which inference is based in comparison to existing techniques.

Jolly-Seber models in MARK

The original Jolly-Seber (JS) model (Jolly, 1965; Seber, 1965) was primarily interested in estimating abundance. Since then, the focus of many mark-recapture experiments changed to estimating survival rates (but not abundance) using the Cormack-Jolly-Seber (CJS)models (Cormack, 1964; Jolly, 1965; Seber, 1965)particularlywith the publication of Lebreton et al. (1992). In previous chapters concer...

Joint Analysis of Live and Dead Encounters of Marked Animals

Recently developed methods for analyzing mark–recapture data allow simultaneous modeling of information from a variety of animal encounters. Incorporating this extra information in an analysis requires use of a more complicated model but can lead to improved precision of estimates. An important aspect of such joint models is that movement of animals to and from the banding site can be incorpora...

Open capture-recapture models with heterogeneity: I. Cormack-Jolly-Seber model.

In open population capture-recapture studies, it is usually assumed that similar animals (e.g., of the same sex and age group) have similar survival rates and capture probabilities. These assumptions are generally perceived to be an oversimplification, and they can lead to incorrect model selection and biased parameter estimates. Allowing for individual variability in survival and capture proba...

Bayesian analysis of mark-recapture data with travel time-dependent survival probabilities

The authors extend the classical Cormack–Jolly–Seber mark-recapture model to account for both temporal and spatial movement through a series of markers (e.g., dams). Survival rates are modeled as a function of (possibly) unobserved travel times. Because of the complex nature of the likelihood, they use a Bayesian approach based on the complete data likelihood, and integrate the posterior throug...

Estimation of Demographic Parameters from Live-Encounter Data: a Summary Review

Estimation of demographic parameters is central to research questions in wildlife management, conservation, and evolutionary ecology. I review the 7 major classes of mark–recapture models that investigators can use to estimate apparent survival and other parameters from live-encounter data. Return rates are the product of 4 probabilities: true survival (S), site fidelity (F), site propensity (d...
